Competition Format

This event is 2 competitions in 1

The first is a BJCP-sanctioned competition:

  • Due to the ever increasing popularity of this competition there will now be a limit of six (6) entries per entrant.
  • All beer categories in the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines will be accepted (Categories 1-34), with the exception of 34A (Clone Beer).
  • Each brewer can submit a maximum of one entry per subcategory. See exception below.
  • Each brewer can submit multiple entries under Category 27 (which does not have subcategories), with the following limitations:
    1. A maximum of two (2) beers may be entered under Category 27 by any entrant, and
    2. If entering multiple beers under Category 27, they must be of distinct styles

The second is a People's Choice competition

  • Attendees of Beau’s Oktoberfest will take part in judging your homebrew!
  • The People's Choice Judging promotes beer literacy by having non-homebrewers judge competition-worthy homebrew and consult the 2015 BJCP guidelines.
  • Each brewer must enter at least one beer (two bottles) in the People’s Choice competition.

  1. For at least one of your entries, you are required to submit four (4) bottles (2 for the BJCP competition and 2 for the People's Choice competition.
  2. For all other entries, two (2) bottles are required for the BJCP component, but you are strongly encouraged to provide 2 additional bottles for the People's Choice competition. Entering beers in this event exposes the general public to beer styles and quality homebrew. Therefore, your contributions to the People’s Choice competition is a great way to spread beer literacy!
  3. All mailed entries must be received at the mailing location or a drop-off location by the entry deadline - please allow for shipping time.
  4. All entries will be picked up from drop-off locations the day of the entry deadline.
  5. All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).
  6. The competition organizers are not responsible for mis-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.
  7. The competition organizers reserve the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries.
  8. Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least one BJCP judge.
  9. Brewers are not limited to one entry in each category but may only enter each subcategory once. For example, participants may enter a Belgian Pale (16B) and Belgian Saison (16C), but may not enter two Saisons, even if they are different brews. Under Category 27 (which does not have subcategories), a maximum of 2 beers may be entered, however they must be distinct styles.
  10. The competition committee reserves the right to combine categories based on number of entries. All possible effort will be made to combine similar styles. All brews in combined categories will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in.
  11. The Best of Show judging will be determined by a Best of Show panel based on a second judging of the top winners.
  12. Bottles will not be returned to entrants.
